Family Sponsorship
This was the first part of the work to be developed as the Humphries family responded to the poverty that that surrounded them. So many women raise their children alone. Others have alcoholic husbands or husbands who spend their money on other women. Some couples just find it very difficult scratching a living. Employers take advantage of the poor and uneducated. Some folk whom we work with have worked for less than 2 pounds for a 10 hour day and have several children to care for. When one considers this against the knowledge that the cost of food in the U.K. is roughly the same, the severity of the problem is evident.
Much of the economy in Guatemala is built upon the agricultural industry. It is mostly the indigenous people who work in the fields. The rains did not come last season and we have experienced a drought as a result. The crops failed and many of the people here in Santiago are out of work. Every day people come to the building asking for work or some sort of help. There is no unemployment benefit here!
We have been supporting some families now for over four years. As well as providing food on a weekly basis, with the Lord’s help we have been able to provide medical help on numerous occasions and have even been able to pay for a number of private operations.
